Endurance in Calisthenics: Strength Endurance at a High Level

How many clean pull-ups can you do in one minute? In endurance, it's not about one heavy element but how long you can sustain your performance.

What is endurance?

The German Calisthenics and Streetlifting Association (Deutscher Calisthenics und Streetlifting Verband, DCSV) describes endurance as strength endurance training: a high level of strength output is sustained over a longer period. Training is based on basic exercises such as push-ups and pull-ups, often combined in supersets or circuits, for example with methods such as Tabata or HIIT.

The competition formats

According to the DCSV, there are various formats within endurance, including:

  • Max Rep: as many clean reps as possible
  • Max Hold: hold a position for as long as possible
  • Timecap: complete a task within a fixed time

One example is the DCSV Endurance Showdown: it featured a qualifying round with a one-minute time limit in which every rep scored points, followed by knockout battles with set exercises and rep counts. Whoever finished faster advanced. The exact rules vary from competition to competition, so always read the rulebook beforehand.

Clean reps count

Especially with high reps, momentum or a shortened range of motion can quickly creep in. In competition, however, only cleanly executed reps count. So train with a full range of motion from the start, even if your numbers are lower at first.

Tips for your training

  • Basics first: clean basic exercises are the foundation. More on this under Sets & Reps.
  • Practise the formats: train specifically with time limits or fixed rep counts so you know your pace.
  • Plan your breaks: short breaks within a set can help you achieve more clean reps overall.
  • Take recovery seriously: high volume needs adequate rest. Not every session has to go to exhaustion.

The right gear

With high reps, your hands quickly get sweaty. The Wrist Bands Cali Representer absorb sweat so your hands stay drier. A breathable cotton shirt such as the ESSENTIAL CALI TEE gives you complete freedom of movement.
