Sets & Reps in Calisthenics: The Foundation for Everything
Before the planche, combos or heavy weights come into play, calisthenics always starts with the same thing: clean basic exercises, set by set, rep by rep.
What is Sets & Reps?
The German Calisthenics and Streetlifting Association (Deutscher Calisthenics und Streetlifting Verband, DCSV) counts Sets & Reps among the five areas of calisthenics. It refers to fundamental training with a high quality of execution: basic exercises are trained systematically in multiple sets and repetitions (reps), with or without added weight.
The basic exercises mainly include:
- Pull-ups
- Push-ups
- Dips
- Squats
- Muscle-ups
Clean form and strict form
The DCSV names two standards of execution:
- Clean form: clean, correct execution
- Strict form: maximum precision, without compensatory or swinging movements
For your training, this means: one rep with full range of motion and control counts for more than three half reps.
Why Sets & Reps is the foundation
Almost every other discipline builds on it. Clean pull-ups and dips are the prerequisite for weighted calisthenics, for endurance and for strength elements such as statics and dynamics. And in freestyle, everything comes together.
Sample beginner plan
Two to three times a week, with at least one rest day in between:
- Pull-ups: 3 sets, as many clean reps as possible
- Dips: 3 sets, as many clean reps as possible
- Push-ups: 3 sets, as many clean reps as possible
- Squats: 3 sets of 15 to 20 reps
If you can't do a clean pull-up or dip yet, start with easier variations, for example Australian pull-ups on a low bar or dips assisted by your legs. Write down your numbers so you can see your progress.
The right clothing
For everyday training, what you need above all is freedom of movement. The ESSENTIAL CALI TEE and the ESSENTIAL INTELLIGAINS TEE fit snugly across the chest and shoulders and loosely at the waist. Pair them with the CALI REPRESENTER Jogger.
